M1 resurfacing program

Resurfacing works

During the spring and summer months the M1 will be resurfaced along large sections of the Monash Freeway, CityLink (Southern Link) and West Gate Freeway.

The asphalt works require temperatures of over 15º Celsius, so while most of the work will take place at night to minimise disruption to motorists, some activities will take place during the day on weekends and weekdays during non-peak times. The lane closures required for these works are expected to cause delays for motorists during these times.

In addition, replacement of key joints on the West Gate Freeway will require lane closures during weekends from mid-September. This work is also expected to cause some delays for traffic.

The M1 upgrade project team apologises for any inconvenience or disturbance that these road works may cause and thanks you for your patience and understanding.

Open graded asphalt

Open graded asphalt has been selected as the primary road surface because of its noise reduction and safety properties.   This type of asphalt mix improves skid resistance by providing enhanced contact between the road and tyres; reduces spray in wet weather therefore allowing vehicles to maintain safe driving speeds; reduces the likelihood of vehicles aquaplaning as water passes through the open texture; and reduces road traffic noise by up to three decibels compared with regular dense graded asphalt.

Residential impacts

The resurfacing program should cause minimal disturbance to surrounding residents.  Noise-related construction impacts will be closely monitored. Residential areas affected by the works will be notified by further letterbox drops advising of the duration of activities in their area.

Resurfacing involves ongoing use of asphalt haulage trucks, pavers, rollers and construction vehicles entering and leaving work zones, which may entail the use of reversing beepers which are required under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004.
