Power Street eastbound entry-ramp - permanent closure

The West Gate Freeway Alliance advises that the existing Power Street eastbound entry-ramp (heading into the Tunnels) is now permanently closed.

Drivers heading into the Burnley Tunnel will need to access the Kings Way new entry-ramp connection from City Road.

All other Power Street entry- and exit-ramps will remain open.

Reason for closing the Power Street eastbound entry-ramp

Currently at the Burnley tunnel entrance, there are two operating lanes for West Gate Freeway traffic and one lane for Kings Way and Power Street eastbound traffic.

When the West Gate Freeway Upgrade is complete, there will be four lanes of traffic at the Burnley tunnel entrance - three lanes for West Gate Freeway traffic and one lane for traffic from the Kings Way eastbound entry-ramp.  This single lane eventually merges with the main freeway traffic, thereby maintaining three lanes of traffic in the Burnley tunnel.

These changed traffic conditions - having three through-lanes of West Gate Freeway traffic heading into the Burnley tunnel - will maximise the capacity of the road, whilst maintaining a safe merge with Kings Way eastbound traffic.
